Birthday party planning

Sunday is Pentecost:  the birthday of the Church.  I was soliciting ideas from the little ones for birthday party ideas, and Doodle pronounced that the Church's favorite color was blue.  Then he asked me, "Who is the Church?"

There's my good, thinking Catholic boy.  I told him that the Church is the mystical Body of Christ.  Just saying it blows my mind.  It's one of those "seeing things darkly" that will be just awesome when we all understand it fully.

So how do you celebrate the birthday of the Mystical Body of Christ?  With cake, stories, and festivities, of course.  Great ideas are here and here.  We'll be reading from Tomie de Paola's Bible Stories, making a red velvet birthday cake, and wearing red.  Though I don't have a lot of decorating finesse, those red dishes on the top shelf will be a welcome addition to our table.

Cooking with fire, we'll grill some fiery buffalo chicken and roast some potatoes.  We'll be studying St. Thomas' wisdom on the Seven Gifts of the Spirit.  We'll pray a litany of the saints to remember the historical action of the Spirit in the Church.  After all, the Holy Spirit moves in palpable, discernable ways.

Through Pentecost, with a birthday party, meditations and prayer--may we all have a wonderful feast to remind us of our salvation and the tremendous helps Jesus gave us in the Church!
