Miss Lulu is well on her way to potty independence, which is marvelous. She's on board and staying dry and clean most of the time. Really the only times she has accidents are when I'm not paying attention, like yesterday when she was banging on my legs and crying, "Pee Pee!" I was trying to get some work done before having to leave for a stupid meeting, and I was zoned out. Shame on me, I know.
She's only 17 mos, and though most pediatricians (who know so much about child-rearing) would cringe at the thought, she's "late" for being dry and clean in this household. Doodle and Beatle were both mostly independent around their first birthday. It's not like we beat our babies or set them on rigid schedules or give them laxatives: I do a very casual form of infant potty training that my kids just responded to. Let me tell you: it's way better than changing and washing toddler diapers!
It just makes sense that we help our babies go potty: we help them eat, talk, walk, and dress themselves. And anyone with a baby knows that they're aware of when they go. We start around the time they sit unassisted. We take them to the potty when they give signs of needing to go, and then at obvious times, like on waking or after eating. In a few months, our babies crawl or toddle to the potty themselves, and as long as we pay attention, there are no accidents. Easy as pie, and not at all like the wars and tears I had with my first, who did "traditional" potty-training (which is a very modern way of doing things--our grandmothers did not have 4-year-olds in diapers!). For 2.5 years he'd learned to use his diaper for a potty--that's hard to unlearn, so it took over a year to accomplish. Didn't make any sense to me.
Anyway . . . Lulu's been so consistent during the day that I barely have anything in my diaper pail when it's wash day (I usually wash every 2-3 days). A couple of pants and her night-time dipes is it. Because of this, I think I'm going to sew a few more night-time dipes to stretch out the wash routine. I may have to go to a wet pail or something, but I hate running 5 items through several cycles--that's a waste of time, money & water.
I've got some terrycloth and hemp fabric, and I think I'll put together some simple contour dipes. I love my Mother-ease one-size, so I'll just use those as a template. Serge a soaker, serge the layers, and done--at least I'm hoping so.
