Birthday Sewing project . . . finished!

It's so cute, and I can't help but think that I would have loved this little playhouse when I was a girl.  I had this cardboard thing that my sister and I used to fill with all of our clothes and toys when it was clean-up time.  Even that I loved, because it was mine.  A little home to take care of myself--preparation for future callings, I guess!  I'm still a little amazed that I pulled it off.

All things considered, it wasn't too hard.  I bought some canvas and some polka-dot cotton fabric, some appliques and some bias tape.  I measured, figured out where to put the windows and the door (keeping them away from the ladder on her low loft bed), and then cut.  I finished the edges, applied the bias tape around the windows, and then made the curtains.  I didn't hem them--I just serged the edges and then sewed them to the outside.  I made ties, applied them, and then attached the velcro to the fabric.  I bought a stick-on kind so that I could attach the playhouse sides to the bed directly, but I've secured it on the fabric side with stitching for reinforcement.

I had seen something similar for $100, and with all of my supplies, this came in around $50.  The good news, though, is that I have enough fabric left over to make one for Lulu, too!

Here's the sleepy birthday girl inspecting my work:

Happy girl means I did it right.  She's pleased with her new abode!
