Sigh. I've tried to knit a tie four or five times now, and I don't like a number of things about most patterns. No. 1 on the list is the flat, boring, stupid-looking straight edge. Ties are pointy: I want my knitted tie to also be pointy. I don't want a tie in fingering yarn that's one layer--not enough heft. I don't want to sew a lining on. I don't want to drive myself crazy doing a bias-knit and then praying that my blocking works out [Note: I hate finishing work]. I don't want it to curl; I don't want to knit it on dpns . . . so picky, I know.
I've been convinced for a while that double-knitting is the way to go. A nice, lush, double-layered fabric--that's what I have in mind. All that really mucks it up is the decreasing/increasing, but there's not so much shaping, at least in one of those dumb, straight-edge knitted ties.
I remembered last night that I had seen an earflap hat with double-knit flaps, and those were shaped. Alas! Not the way I was hoping. Undeterred, I found stitchdiva's nice tutorial on shaping in double knitting, and I put together a little something-something that I hope will work up.
Did I tell you that I also don't want to do the whole "double-pass"? I hate wasting time :) I'll cast on for it just as soon as the sweater is finished. One sleeve left and I have to fix the neck again, but I can do that today if nothing crazy happens (like another flood in the basement).
